Good evening again my friends, and welcome back to another Quizzy Monday! Apologies in advance for any typos I miss in tonight's blog; I'm using a new laptop setup that needs improving, which I intend to do so this week. Also before we start, a quick update on UK Gameshows for those who missed Iain Weaver's post on Tumblr yesterday: the site is currently offline due to complications with 'autocorrect bots', which their tech guys are currently trying to resolve and they aim to be back by next weekend. Anyway, on with tonight's shows...
Lancaster is appearing for only the seventh time in the BBC era, of which its previous best was reaching the QFs in the 2004-05 series, though they were beaten finalists on one occasion in the ITV era; its last appearance was a first round exit in the 2019-20 series. Playing for them this year were:
Josie Hyland, from Ainsdale on Merseyside, studying PPE
Talhah Hussain, from Manchester, studying History
Captain: Lex Wiggins, from Watford, studying Maths
Eoin Neale, from Bledlow Ridge in Buckinghamshire, studying Physics
Lincoln is appearing on UC for the first time ever this series, and, as I mentioned last week, is my cousin's current place of study! I can confirm she was not present on the panel tonight. The four who were were:
Grace Bloomfield, from Buckingham, studying Chemistry
Laura Bruce, from Perth, studying Conservation of Cultural Heritage
Captain: Samuel Orman-Chan, from Derbyshire, studying Computer Science
John Clayworth, from Wigan, studying History
Lancaster took the first starter of the night and all three of the resulting bonuses. Neither side got the second, before Mr Orman-Chan took Lincoln's first ever UC starter; their bonuses included a mention of the Falkirk Wheel which, ironically, my cousin and I have both been to! Lincoln took a second starter to take the lead, before Lancaster fought back with the first picture round, after which they led 40-35. A starter and sole bonus pushed Lancaster further ahead, but Lincoln then had a fine run on the buzzer, only briefly derailed by a penalty, which saw them pull away. After the music round, they now led 95-55.
Another starter took Lincoln into three figures, but their hit-and-miss bonus form continued, just one taken, before Lancaster finally reawoke via Mr Hussain. They only took one bonus though, and Lincoln duly took another starter to pull away again, though they also took just one bonus. The second picture round went to Lancaster, who took two bonuses to close the gap to 125-90. A penalty increased it, but a starter and full set of bonuses reduced it back to just 15 points. Another penalty pushed them back again, but, again, they made immediate ammends, and now the teams were level pegging! But back came Lincoln as Messrs Clayworth and Orman-Chan took crucial starters, and two bonuses from both sets put them within sight of victory. But a penalty allowed Lancaster to pull back to within just five points. Next starter would win it; Mr Wiggins buzzed first, but was wrong and lost five! Mr Clayworth took the points and that was game over. At the gong, Lincoln won 170-145.
A pretty good exciting contest that; I think Lincoln deserved the win in the end. Well done them, the first debutant team to win their first ever match since Huddersfield in 19-20 (thanks Harrison Whitaker for confirming that!) and best of luck in the next round! Hard lines to Lancaster to lose such a close match like that, but they played pretty well and may well have done enough for a repechage place; thanks for playing for now though!
The stats: Mr Clayworth was the best buzzer of the night with six starters, while Mr Hussain was best for Lancaster with three. On the bonuses, Lancaster managed 16 out of 24 (with three penalties) and Lincoln 14 out of 30 (with two penalties).
Next week's match: Green Templeton College Oxford (more debutants!) vs Darwin College Cambridge
Only Connect’s penultimate first
round match was contested by the Jive Bunnies, Martin Berry, Gurdas Singh
Sually and captain Mark Levy, and the Sorcerers, Raphael Kapo, Carolina Cordero
and captain Emily Bourke.
My Dad and I jointly claim two
points on the first question of the show about sporting implements; the Bunnies
led 6-5 at the end of that first round. We also both worked out the final
question of the second round about consecutive monarchs; the teams were tied on
8-each after that.
The Bunnies went first on the
Walls, and found one group very quickly, but failed to add to it; they got
three for connections though, so four points. The Sorcerers took full
advantage, taking a fairly quick full house, a full ten points, and with it an
18-12 lead going into Missing Vowels. The Bunnies recovered OK in what was a
pretty tough round, but the Sorcerers hung on to win 20-15. Well done both;
best of luck in your next matches!
Next week’s match: Doctors
Matthews vs Keyboard Worriers
Mastermind was won by Diane Howe,
whose 26 points saw her take the latest semi-final place ahead of Maurizio
Giacometto with 23 and Ian Walmsley and Jonnie Walker with 20 each.
And that's this week done! Thanks as ever for reading. Next week, the first round of Only Connect concludes with out last two new teams of the series, and a second Oxbridge derby of the series on UC, which I know people will be looking forward to(!). Back as usual, same time same place next week with that and more, so, see yous then...
