University Challenge 2020-21: Round 2: Match 1: Imperial vs St Andrews

Good evening friends, and welcome to the second round of this year's UC! A tournament which, hopefully, has been able to complete being filmed; given that a Children in Need special for next week has been filmed, I'm hoping that means the final three rounds are in the bag too. Anyway, on with tonight's show, the first second round match between two good teams, one of whom, unfortunately, would be going straight out tonight.

Imperial were defeated by Strathclyde in their first round match 190-155, but survived to the play-offs, where they just beat Exeter 160-155. They were unchanged from those two times:
Justin Wong, from Hong Kong, studying Maths
Katie Marrow, from the Peak District, studying Physics
Captain: Michael Kohn, from Finchley in London, studying Pure Maths
Imran Rahman, from Petaling Jaya in Malaysia, studying Theoretical Physics

St Andrews took the more straight forward route through, comfortably beating Darwin of Cambridge in their first match 255-90. They were also unchanged from that one time:
Tom Sherlock, from Hertfordshire, studying International Relations and Modern History
Max Holtzman, from Maine, graduated in Maths and Physics
Captain: Ahzha Martin Khemsar, from Glasgow, studying Economics
John Er, from New York, studying Philosophy

So off we set, and it was Mr Wong who opened the night's scoring, and the London side took just one bonus from their first set on sacred texts; St Andrews were off quickly too thanks to Mr Er, and they also took a sole bonus from their first set on trees. A penalty set the Scots side back five, and allowed Mr Kohn, Imperial's MVP thus far, to push his side into the lead. A fairly routine full bonus set on elements was taken. Mr Martin Khemsar recovered his side by knowing Harold Wilson was PM when England won the World Cup (a tournament I've found an alternate version of yesterday where England beat Scotland in the final!), but just one bonus followed again. St Andrews did take the first picture round, on locations of film festivals, which gave them a narrow 45-40 lead.

But another penalty dropped them back level, and Mr Rahman then gave Imperial the lead back. Two bonuses on Asian rivers were followed by Mr Kohn pushing them further ahead, with just one bonus this time. Another St Andrews penalty coupled with another Imperial pickup put Imperial within one starter of three figures. The music round, on songs written by Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry, went to St Andrews; two bonuses gut their gap to 90-55.

A second starter in a row for St Andrews and a full bonus set on languages put them back in the match. But a quick buzz from Mr Kohn pushed Imperial into three figures and gave them a bonus set on beer, which they took two on. Two more starters for the Imperial captain, with five out of six bonuses, coupled with another St Andrews penalty, put the London side within sight of victory. The second picture starter was abandoned after Mr Martin Khemsar buzzed, but paused too long before giving the right answer. The bonuses, on authors supported by bookseller Sylvia Beach, eventually went to Imperial, who increased their lead to 180-65.

The London side had now won the game, but St Andrews went down fighting, with Mr Er taking the next starter and a full set of bonuses on athletics. Mr Kohn twice found himself penalised for 'just an' interruptions, but it didn't really matter now. Mr Wong took the final starter, but the London side failed to add anything from the bonuses. At the gong, Imperial won 180-90.

A low scoring but good contest, two good teams who its unfortunate drew each other at this stage. Well done to Imperial on a deserved win and best of luck in the QFs! Hard lines to St Andrews, a better team than that scoreline suggests who were a tad unlucky with a few buzzes, but thanks very much for playing!

The stats: Mr Kohn was, again, the best buzzer of the night with seven starters, while Messrs Martin Khemsar and Er were joint best for St Andrews with two each. On the bonuses, Imperial managed 18 out of 30 (with two penalties) and St Andrews 12 out of 18 (with a costly SIX penalties).

Next week's match: Strathclyde we know will be back, and, if the last two series are any guide, they'll be playing Edinburgh, but we shall see.

Only Connect pitted the Apres Skiers, David and Jessica Southworth and captain Selina Conroy, against the Colleagues, Andrew Bevan, Andy McGurn and captain Khalil Campbell. The latter narrowly led 4-3 after the first round, but the former pulled back to lead 9-7 after the second. A slightly better wall for the Colleagues levelled the scores at 14-14, but the Skiers just edged the final round for an 18-17 win!

Mastermind, meanwhile, was another close run contest; Edana Guest won win 17 points, while the other three, including Alex ‘Magdalen’ Hardwick from last year’s UC, all finished on 16.
